Density
4 Steps for solving a problem using a formulaHere's an example problem for us to practice with: A block of aluminum occupies a volume of 15.0 mL and has a mass of 40.5 g. What is its density?
1. Write down what you know! v = 15 mL m = 40.5 g 2. Write down the formula. Since the problem is asking for density, we need to write the formula to find density, which is D = m ÷ v OR D = m / v 3. Take what you know and plug it into the formula. Be sure that whatever number and units you have for mass goes where the m is, and the number and unit for volume match their location in the formula. D = m ÷ v = 40.5 g ÷ 15 mL 4. Solve the problem and include the units! We can solve the math problem by simply dividing, but the units don't cancel in the same way. Make sure the correct units are included in your answer! D = 2.7 g / mL |
Why I ❤ Density! The formula for density is D = m ÷ v, where m is the mass and v is the volume. When written as a fraction. the m and v line up and give us a <3 shape! While many struggle with calculating density (and may not like it that much), this is a little trick to make remembering density just a little bit easier! So remember, like it or not,
